The Management of a large Mediterranean Wetland: the Camargue (Rhône Delta, France)

Tour du Valat Biological Station, France

www.tourduvalat.org

Aim: The course is run in the form of an interactive study tour, meeting a large number of local stakeholders in management / use of the local wetlands. It aims at providing participants with the basic understanding of the management of a large Mediterranean wetland (1450 km²) which involves dozens of organizations, coordinated by a Nature Regional Park. It deals with key questions such as role-sharing between institutions, governance of the whole territory, etc. The study tours are run depending on demand and available funding.

Who can participate: Staff involved in the management of Mediterranean wetland: from
Government bodies, NGOs, local authorities, users of natural resources etc. Usually, study tours are project-based (eg. EU, GEF etc.) but can often accommo date a few more participants from outside the project, provided they can cover their costs. Specific study tours can also be  organized upon special request. So far, tours have been organized for staff from France, Turkey, Spain, Italy and Jordan. They can be organized in either English or French (Spanish would be a possibility too).

Duration: Usually 6-8 days.

Location: The Camargue, South France.

In collaboration with: Numerous Camargue local partners.
